Fire Extinguisher Servicing & Maintenance

Ensuring you have fully serviced fire equipment is a vital part of your fire protection duties and part of that is choosing the right company to carry out your fire equipment service and maintenance.

At Total Fire Group, we know how important it is for both businesses and people to have confidence in the quality of their fire extinguishers. That’s why we provide a complete range of fire extinguishers, all kite marked to BS EN3 and in addition covered by a 5 year warranty. Additionally, if you need fire extinguisher installation we can provide that too.

You must have your fire extinguishers serviced every 12 months with what’s known as a “basic service.” These fire extinguisher checks must be done in accordance with BS 5036-6 and you should always get your service carried out by a third party accredited fire extinguisher technician, with the correct tools, training and experience.

Fire extinguisher servicing not only ensures that you’re complying with regulations, it ensures that your fire extinguishers are ready and in full working order – whenever you might need them.

We provide fire extinguisher servicing, maintenance and checks in Manchester and across the North West.

Frequently asked questions

1. How long do fire extinguishers last?

A fire extinguisher does not have a sell by date or a date where it has to be replaced. As long as the extinguisher is serviceable and in good condition the extinguisher can be refilled or over hauled and can last for multiple refills.

2. How often do fire extinguishers need servicing?

The British Standard for fire extinguishers recommends that every extinguisher receives an annual basic service, carried out by a competent service engineer. Additionally, after five years, all water and powder based fire extinguishers need to have an extended service that is more in depth than the basic annual service. CO2 fire extinguishers last for 10 years before they will need pressure testing.

3. Are fire extinguishers a legal requirement?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) states that appropriate fire-fighting equipment, including portable fire extinguishers, must be provided where there is any risk of fire. This applies to all non-domestic premises in England and Wales.

4. How do you repair a fire extinguisher?

Do not attempt to repair a broken or damaged fire extinguisher yourself. Contact an accredited fire extinguisher technician who can replace and install a new one for you.

5. How often do fire extinguishers need to be replaced?

Fire extinguishers don’t have a date where they need to be replaced. They will need to be replaced if they are damaged or not working properly. You will be informed of any problems on your annual inspection or your extended service.

6. How do you dispose of a fire extinguisher?

Expired or faulty commercial fire extinguishers can be disposed of by service engineers when they come to check your equipment. You would usually expect to pay a small fee for this or it may be covered in any fire extinguisher maintenance and servicing agreement you have in place.

There are also specialist firms who can collect bulk quantities of extinguishers for recycling.
