A fire extinguisher does not have a sell by date or a date where it has to be replaced. As long as the extinguisher is serviceable and in good condition the extinguisher can be refilled or over hauled and can last for multiple refills.
The British Standard for fire extinguishers recommends that every extinguisher receives an annual basic service, carried out by a competent service engineer. Additionally, after five years, all water and powder based fire extinguishers need to have an extended service that is more in depth than the basic annual service. CO2 fire extinguishers last for 10 years before they will need pressure testing.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) states that appropriate fire-fighting equipment, including portable fire extinguishers, must be provided where there is any risk of fire. This applies to all non-domestic premises in England and Wales.
Do not attempt to repair a broken or damaged fire extinguisher yourself. Contact an accredited fire extinguisher technician who can replace and install a new one for you.
Fire extinguishers don’t have a date where they need to be replaced. They will need to be replaced if they are damaged or not working properly. You will be informed of any problems on your annual inspection or your extended service.
Expired or faulty commercial fire extinguishers can be disposed of by service engineers when they come to check your equipment. You would usually expect to pay a small fee for this or it may be covered in any fire extinguisher maintenance and servicing agreement you have in place.
There are also specialist firms who can collect bulk quantities of extinguishers for recycling.
